Transmission Yolk Seal Repair
Share

Situation:
When a customer receives equipment from the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), rotating components with seal surfaces are traditionally mild carbon steel. During service the seals create worn patterns that allow the oil to escape or debris to enter the closed system. This is the starting point of the seal or sealing surface failure.
Task at Hand:
Historically, Industrial hard chrome plating has been utilized as a seal surface repair. Due to its low cost, this has been the industry standard for over 60 years. After repairing with hard chrome plating, the life expectancy of that seal surface is approximately 1000-2000 rotating hours. Then, the original failure mechanism starts again.
Action Plan:
- HIH Technologies develops a chrome plating replacement with a much longer life cycle.
Results:
- HIH Technologies develops a chrome plating replacement material technology – DURA-BIDE_68. This material technology extends the life of the sealing surface, and we have seen run times of over 40,000 rotating hours. The seals also last longer running on the DURA-BIDE_68 material and therefore, there is less risk of seal or sealing surface failure and unexpected downtime.
Environmental Impact:
1. We have eliminated carcinogenic industrial hard chrome plating which is not good for the environment or the employees working within them.
2. We have dramatically reduced the risk of oil leaking into ground system environments.
3. We have reduced downtime, environmental impact, and maintenance expenses for the owner of the equipment.
